Making Money From the Undocumented

Publius has an excellent alternative to Don Trump's bad math. Instead of spending trillions to deport the undocumented, Publius has a Smart Policy: use the undocumented to put cash into the pocket of every American.
Here’s how.
Every one of the undocumented pays $5,000 for a green card. For some with large families, this will add to a lot. So, we let everyone pay over time. As soon as you start paying, everyone in your family gets a work visa. Once the first $5,000 is in, one of your family members gets a Green Card and so on till everyone gets one. Then, the regular five years to citizenship. Each $5,000 goes straight to the Social Security fund. Right into pockets of all Americans.
Here’s the killer: All of this is done on an income tax form. This means that not only does the initial $5,000 fund Social Security, but so does every subsequent paycheck. With 11-15 million new contributors, Social Security gets topped up fast, funding the retirement of all Americans. Yes, even the yet to be born!!
The all-cash black economy will vanish overnight because, with a Green Card and citizenship in the balance, none of the newly documented will accept cash from employers. This will move all the newly documented to at least minimum wage, driving up living standards for all of us as GDP grows. The faster the incomes of the newly documented rise, the faster our tax base rises and the faster Social Security is funded.
Cost? What cost? These are tax returns that the IRS loves to get. Publius’ system regulates and pays for itself.
As for all those folks who may want to enter the U.S. in the future, no problem. We know a thing or two about stock markets so we post the spot price for labor at all border crossings with a big sign: “Don’t pay the coyotes and risk your life. Pay US. Cash or credit, we take it all.”
All done through the IRS at not cost to the taxpayer. No extra immigration police, no Trumpamo. No tripling of the Federal budget.
Now THAT is an immigration policy. Zero cost and cash in the pocket of every American. What’s not to like?
